FEATURED OFFERING:
French Oak Wine Casks
Located west of St. Julien, Chateau Talbot spans 100 acres. Highly regarded for their valuable terroir, the vineyard produces excellent Cabernet Sauvignon wines grown from several varieties of grapes including Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot.
The Cordieres came to Bordeaux from Lorraine in 1877. Their business soon prospered with lower priced wines and a contract to supply the entire French army with its daily ration of vin ordinaire during WWI. After the war, Cordier bought many vineyards, including Chateau Talbot.
French Oak was the preferred choice for barrels in Bordeaux: it is easily bent, has low porosity, good tannin content and a mild, creamy aroma. Using oak barriques is a question of style, not cost: age adds a subliminal quality to the wine; size adds a greater "oakey" flavor. Coopers (barrel makers) were selected for construction skill and how he seasoned the wood or "toasted" the barrels. Oak was auctioned and valued by quality. The wood was split, not sawn, which kept the grain tighter, making a high quality wine. It was seasoned outdoors for several years, which deleted unagreeable aromas and reduced more aggressive tannins. Chateau Talbot is one of the five "Grands Crus Classes" established in 1855, the finest quality Bordeaux vintages. Their wines are casked into 300 litre hogsheads (25 dozen bottles) and aged for a minimum of fourteen months.
Selected from the forest of Le Troncais (located in the center of France) for its tight grain and higher tannin content, French Oak from Troncais is very desirable for long term maturation, owing to its understated aromatics. The trees have long been sough after as they give the wine a smooth and delicate taste of the wood. French Oak barriques were used to age vintages running from 1960 to 1980, some of the best years in the history of Chateau Talbot vineyards. To achieve their signature flavor, the vintners use 30% new wood annually, which made these casks available for import. These beautiful French Oak casks will be specified for custom designed wine cellars, flooring and millwork.
